Standard IV: Assessment and Evaluation
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.

  • Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
The Related Rates lesson with the Discussion Board is one example of assessing the student using technology.  The students were already taught Related Rates problems and this was a way to assess if the students understand not only the process, but also the elements that make up a problem.  A second example was using Excel to create graphs of the students progress in the Communications Lesson for Algebra One.  Graphing the data allowed me to visualize the students progress.  Geometry webs created with Inspiration provided me with an understanding of the students connections amoung topics as well as their knowledge of the topics.

  • Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
At the start of this project the students were given a survey to determine their experience with technology and their capabilities at home.  The data was then analyzed and interpreted to help determine the types of projects that should be assigned and the time necessary to complete the project.  For example, if many of the student did not have home computers on line, I could not assign homework based on that need.  [Technology Survey]  [Survey Results]
In in another case, the Algebra One Communications Lesson the students were given a writing assignment which was graded according to the Language Arts Writing Rubrics. This rubric was used for grading because the school has a goal to improve communication skills across all content areas.  Students were scored according to the rubric and the data was gathered from the first writing assignment and was used as baseline data.   After several writing assignments and discussions on how to properly communicate mathematically, a written assignment was again scored according to the rubric.  Excel was used to create a graph of the data.  From the graph you can see that there was a significant amount of improvement.

IV. Assessment and Evaluation.
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies.

Teachers:

  1. Apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
  2. Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
  3. Apply multiple methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.
