Thank you for your interest in my project!
  • My name is Harvey "Jay" Pennington and am a full-time instructor in the mathematics program at the below described school. In the past, I have taught math in high school and community college settings. In recent years, my instruction has focused on algebra 1, geometry, and some pre-algebra.
  • Birmingham Covington School is a  "school of choice" in the Birmingham Public Schools District for grades 3-8. The students that attend this school represent those that have chosen this school due to its highlights inclusive of technology, science, and small classes.
  • At BCS, I taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Honor's Geometry. However, the varying levels of technology intervention pertaining to this study were only done with Algebra 1.
Technology at BCS
  • In order to assess how well BCS is integrating technology, I used "a self-assessment tool designed to provide schools with the information they need to better integrate technology into their educational process." The assessment or STaR chart revealed the following information:
          Hardware: Target Tech
    Connectivity: Mid Tech

    Content: High Tech

    Professional Development: High Tech

    Integration and Use: Mid Tech

Based on the average of my responses, BCS is at the High Tech level.
