Adopt A Tree!

The purpose of this unit was to enhance technology use in the Kindergarten Science/Math curriculum in the context of the children adopting a tree.

  • At the beginning of the unit, we had parts of a tree, bark, branches and leaves.  We used a video camera to record the children interacting with the tree parts.  As a revisiting activity, we viewed the video and talked to the children about their ideas and predictions. (Lesson Plan 2: Exploring Trees)
  • The next step in our unit was to go to Levagood Park where the children each picked out their own tree to adopt.  The digital camera was used to record each child with their tree. (Lesson Plan 3: Adopting a Tree)
  • The circumference of the trees were measured with yarn and the measurements were graphed.  The Internet was used to find the circumference of the Great Sequoia Trees. (Lesson Plan 5: The Great Sequoia Tree)
