Hello!
Welcome to my e-portfolio!
Who
am I?
My name
is Jennifer Herm, I am a graduate of the University
of Michigan-Dearborn. My major is science and my minor is math. In
April 2003, I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Elementary
Education. I am certified to teach all subjects at the elementary school
level, as well as math and science at the middle school level. While at
U of M, my pre-student teaching experiences included practicums at Thorne
Intermediate School (Westwood), William Ford Elementary (Dearborn) and
the Child Development Center at the University. I also worked as a para-pro
substitute in the Dearborn Public
Schools. As the final phase of preparation to be a teacher, I
completed a semester of student-teaching in Bruce Pantaleo's fourth
grade class at Long Elementary in Dearborn. Located near Michigan Avenue
and Telegraph, next to Crowley Park, Long serves about 230 students
and received the Governor's
Golden Apple Award in 2002. As part of my student-teaching experience,
I participated in the
MITTEN
(Michigan Teachers' Technology Education Network) project through
the University.

Student
Teaching Environment
The
class in which I taught was composed of 16 students. As well as a computer
in the classroom, the students also visited the computer lab of 30 iMacs
twice a week. In addition to the regular lab, there is a computer lab on
a cart which can be transported from room to room. This wireless lab is
made up of 12 iBooks. All computers have Internet access. The students
were quite comfortable using computers for a variety of activities, including
webquests, PowerPoint presentations and word processing activities.
Some students also had experience using digital cameras, both video cameras
and still cameras. In addition to seeing many different ways to incorporate
technology into student instruction, I was also able to use programs such
as EasyGrade Pro to assist with calculating grades. Before
I began my lessons, I worked with my mentoring teacher to evaluate the
technology at Long using the STaR
Chart questionnaire. According to the STaR Chart results,
Long is at the mid-tech level for technology.
