Community Quilt

In order to help the students understand that a community is made up of many important people, businesses and buildings, we decided to make a quilt. Just as a quilt is made up of different pieces of fabric and material, a community is made up of different people and businesses.

After talking about important jobs that are present in a community, we decided to make a quilt. The students came up with different people and jobs that they could draw--carpenters, schools, doctors, and drug stores--are just some of the people and jobs they came up with. The students then drew and colored in their pictures. Once their pictures were finished, the students wrote captions to go along with their picture.

Pictures of the illustrations were taken by the students with the digital camera, and then inserted into Microsoft PowerPoint. The students typed up their captionson their own slide in the PowerPoint slide show. Once the slides were finished, they were printed out and glued onto construction paper. Each slide was then glued onto a large piece of roll paper, along with the words, "Our Community Quilt". The large 'quilt' is hung up in the hallway where everyone can see.

We also created a Techno Book from the PowerPoint presentation, by printing out the slides, mounting them on construction paper, and them laminating them. The Techno Book is then added to the class collection of books, and can be revisited from time to time.
