At the beginning of the semester, students were given a Term Project Checklist.   Each group had seven weeks to research a topic of their choice from an assigned decade and apply their findings to a comprehensive presentation.   After researching, assessing, and editing, they had to demonstrate their knowledge with a series of criteria.  This page highlights some examples of their diligence and creativity. Our students worked hard - and it shows!

Online and Database Research                                                                                        During their research, one group used www.FBI.gov to find primary sources for robbers and mobsters of the 1930's.  Among other things, they found a Mug shot of Al Capone, and Documents for Bonnie and Clyde.

Maps                                                                                                                                      Students were also required to find or create maps regarding an aspect of their period.  Here is one!

Segregation in the 1950's

Posters                                                                                                                                      Using Microsoft Publisher, students created  posters  as though they were living during the period.  The poster had to reflect the decade or topic they were covering.

Entertainment of the 1940's

New Kids on the Block Poster

Charts                                                                                                                                  Students were also required to show information in a chart or graph.

Wayne County School Attendance in the 1930's

Vietnam War Casualties

Bing Crosby Chart

Handouts                                                                                                                            One form of assessment for the presenters was to give handouts.  Websites provided puzzle makers to accomplish this.

1930's Word Search

Facts about the 1960's

PowerPoint Presentations                                                                                          While it was not required, many students chose to do their presentations in PowerPoint.  We taught those unfamiliar with the program how to do it, and gave pointers to those who had some experience with the program.

Pearl Harbor PowerPoint

Videos                                                                                                                               Each group had to create either a music video or a commercial that represented one aspect of their decade.

To view these, you will need Windows Media Player.  Click here to download!

Vietnam War Anti-draft Commercial

Say No to Drugs Commercial

MTV Music Awards Video

AP U.S. History                                                                                                                  Our AP U.S. history class wrote a term paper on a significant Supreme Court decision of the 20th century.  Upon completion of the paper they created a PowerPoint presentation to describe to the class the history of their case, the majority and minority opinions, and the social significance of the decision.  In this portion of the project they were allowed to state their opinions of the case.

Griswold v. Connecticut

Muller v. Oregon

Enhancing our classroom with efficiency

During the semester, we used PowerPoint 2003 to rebuild textbook lessons in a more interesting and interactive format.  Paragraph by paragraph each section of the textbook we covered was custom animated in PowerPoint so that all types of learners would be stimulated.  When very important lines came onto each screen, they would change colors, indicating that students needed to write the material in their notes.

Chapter 12 Section One

We also used programs such as Inspiration 7.0 to easily create worksheets and graphic organizers  Inspiration 7.0 was particularly helpful in keeping project topics and groups in order.   Click here to download a free trial of Inspiration!
