Professional Background

My name is Elizabeth Garcia. I teach third grade at Nowlin Elementary School in Dearborn, Michigan. I have been teaching in Dearborn for ten years. I have obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Wayne State University and a Master of Arts in Reading from Western Michigan University. I have also studied at the University of Windsor in Canada, and Stirling University in Scotland, U.K.

Currently, I am studying technology through the University of Michigan-Dearborn. I am fortunate to have an excellent student teacher, Melissa Dehring, who has proven to be an invaluable resource for my students as well as me. Ms. Dehring has graciously shared a wealth of knowledge with us regarding the use of technology in the classroom.

Nowlin School is located in a quiet neighborhood. Our building is equipped with a computer lab that has 28 outdated Macs available for student use. The Macs are connected to the Internet through a single phone line. Our Media Center recently obtained five DelIs, each with individual Internet access. I also have four laptops in my classroom. Technology in each Dearborn Public School is currently being updated.

A recent STaR Chart survey ranked Nowlin School overall as Low-Tech. Students are motivated and eager to learn more about computers. Collectively speaking, the staff needs more training to become technology proficient educators.
