Blood Web Hunt

  1. Objectives:

Students will:

    1. Successfully navigate the Internet.
    2. Use the Internet to investigate the components of human blood.
     II.     Materials/Supplies:     III.     Procedures:

Introduction:

Before going to the computer lab, divide students into groups of two. Explain that this is the person they will be completing the assignment with. After students are in groups, take the class down to the computer lab.

Motivation:

    1. Once in the computer lab, connect all of the computers to Altiris Vision and go to the BrainPOP web site.
    2. Explain to students that they are going to watch a short video on blood and begin the video.
    3. After the video, have students take out their work sheets on the components of blood.
    4. Explain that with their group member they will complete all four sheets. They will complete two while their partner completes the other two. After both members have completed their work, they will switch with their partner and complete the remainder of their handouts. They will only be finished when each have all four sheets completed.

Content to be covered:

During this activity students will learn about the components of blood.

Student Activities:

    1. While still connected to Altiris Vision, type in the first web site from the red blood cell handout.
    2. Model for the students what they are to do at the site to find the answers they are responsible for.
    3. Disconnect all of the computers from Altiris Vision and allow students to begin their assignment.
    4. Be available for student questions in the lab.

Independent Practice:

When students have completed their portion of the project, allow groups to get together and exchange sheets.

IV.     Conclusion of Lesson/ Checking for Understanding:

After students have completed their worksheets, have them turn them in to be graded. Explain to students that they are to put the two sheets they completed on top and staple all four together. Also, discuss with the students that tomorrow during class, they will go over them together.

     V.     Behavior Expectations and Management Techniques:

When working in the computer lab there is a set of rules that every student knows. Revisit these rules and explain to the students that if they cannot cooperate, they will be asked to leave.

     VI.    Evaluations of Objectives/Reflection:

After collecting students' red blood cell, white blood cell, platelet, and plasma worksheets, it was evident that students could successfully navigate the Internet while investigating the components of human blood. Some students needed more guidance then others, but all students seemed comfortable on the Internet. The hardest part was correctly typing in the web addresses. Also, be sure to group students wisely. If one of the group members does not complete the assignment, their partner will also suffer.
