Introduction to the Circulatory System

  1. Objectives:

Students will be able to do:

    1. Successfully take guided notes.
    2. Begin to understand how the components of the circulatory system work together.
     II.     Materials/Supplies:     III.     Procedures:

Introduction:

Discuss with students briefly that they are going to begin learning about the human circulatory system. Ask the students what they already know about the system. Doing this will allow the teacher to access the students prior knowledge and to learn of any misconceptions the students may have.

Motivation:

    1. Prepare for this lesson by setting up the video to the beginning of the tape. Be sure to fast forward through any previews or short commercials that may be before the video. This will save precious class time.
    2. Tell students that they will be watching a very energetic scientist, Bill Nye, give them a tour of the human body. If they have never seen a Bill Nye video before, prepare them for his humor and wit.

Content to be covered:

During this activity students will learn the about the components of the circulatory system, including blood, veins, arteries, capillaries and the heart muscle.

Student Activities:

    1. Pass out the student "Blood and Circulation Video Notes" handouts.
    2. Read the directions as a whole class.
    3. Allow the students to look over what they are expected to write while watching the video.
    4. Gather students' attention and begin the video.
    5. During the video, it is very helpful to pause it to allow students to write. Bill Nye talks very fast!

Independent Practice:

After the short video, give the students 1-2 minutes to reflect on what they have learned from watching the video. There is a space at the end of the handout for students to complete this task.

IV.      Conclusion of Lesson/ Checking for Understanding:

After students have had the time to reflect, go over the handout as a whole class. Allow for students to correct any mistakes they may have made while watching the video. Discuss any topics that stand out or that students have questions on. Collect the handouts and discuss what the students will be learning next time they meet for science.

      V.      Behavior Expectations and Management Techniques:

Watching a video with a large group is difficult for some students. Before turning off the lights and beginning the video, discuss what is expected of a good audience. Explain that if they cannot be a cooperative member of the audience, they will be asked to sit in the hall during the remainder of the video.

    VI.     Evaluation of Objectives/Reflection:

    1. After collecting students guided note handouts, it was evident that many could successfully watch the video while taking notes, although a handful had a difficult time. We will practice guided note taking many times again to prefect the students' techniques.
    2. From the short discussion after the video, it was evident that students have begun to understand how the components of the circulatory system work together. The students asked many questions and other students were able to answer their questions will little prompting.
