This
year in first grade our students are required to learn about birds, fish,
and mammals. We
thought that using technology would be very beneficial for enhancing
their learning about this subject area in science. Our goal was
for the children to be able to tell us names of bird, fish, and mammals
as
well as being able to tell us why it is a bird, fish, or mammal. For example,
a lion is a mammal because is has fur, live babies, and a
backbone.
So
we began our journey of learning about birds, fish, and mammals. One of the vehicles
we
used on this journey was technology. We incorporated various types of technology
into each of the lessons for this unit. Below is a list of the lessons
and technology involved for each lesson. For specific details of each lesson
visit the "Exhibits."
- Using digital cameras
on a field trip to the Detroit
Zoo.
- Using Microsoft
Word on the computer to type stories about their pictures from
the zoo.
- Using Kidspiration
software
to produce story webs about a bird, fish, or mammal.
- Using Kid Pix to
draw
a picture based on their story webs.
- Using Microsoft
Word on
the computer to type stories from the story web.
- Using Kidspiration
software to place animal stamps in categories labeled bird, fish,
and mammal.
- Navigating
a power point
presentation of a classroom book called "First Graders, First Graders, What Do
You See?"
