| Participating in
the MITTEN project has helped me to realize the important role that
technology plays in preparing our students for the future. This
was a very rewarding experience for myself and the children. I
was able to watch the children develop skills and confidence using
technology; the students enjoyed the chance to use the computers for
more than just games and pointless activity. I also came to the realization that using technology is not always feasible in a first grade classroom. During this project I was fortunate to have the help of several adults each time we entered the computer lab, and without the help of out "fifth grade buddies" our project would not have been as successful. I found that integrating technology in a school that is considered "high tech" without the appropriate support is extremely difficult. I also found ways to find valuable resources in parents, students, and friends. Using technology helped my students to research their topics more thouroughly and allowed them to adapt the assignment to their own academic level. Technology acted as a facilitator for the students, they were guided by the programs and activities. Students who often struggle with reading and expressing themselves were able to exceed their own expectations. If I taught this lesson in the future, I would be sure to plan out each step very carefully. I found that careful planning is crucial to the success of a lesson that is supported with technology. I found that it is often difficult to not lose sight of the big picture. I had to keep reminding myself that the goal of technology integration is enhance the lesson, not take over the lesson. As a result of this experience, I have found that I would benefit from a workshop on some of the "fun" programs available for children. I feel that I would like to know more about programs such as Imageblender, Kidspiration, and PowerPoint. I would also benefit from more training with Macintosh computers and their programs. |
