The Underground Railroad was a place for slaves to hide. It is a group of houses and white and black people
worked together to help slaves escape. The people believed that slavery wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair because the
slaves had to work in the hot sun and didn’t get paid. They got less food and did not go to school. A woman named
Harriet Tubman helped slaves get to the Underground Railroad. She was an escaped slave who didn’t like slavery.
The masters didn’t like to pay the slaves and didn’t care about them. They treated the slaves like they owned
them. The law said that the black and white people should not help slaves escape from slavery. They did it
anyway because they didn’t believe the law was right. Today if we think a law is not fair you go to court.
