Standard VI

While we did not discuss plagiarism with our students, we did talk about the importance of safe use of the internet.  Garfield has WebSense, which blocks students from websites with potentially inappropriate or dangerous content.  I have explained the importance of this to my students, and why they might be blocked from some websites that they might use at home.  Mrs. Auler and I were also mindful of this when searching for websites to use for our web quests.  I searched specifically for websites with an ".edu" ending to them so that I knew that the information would be educational, safe, and accurate.  I also listed all my sources directly on the web quest, and pointed this fact out to students.  I told them that it is important to include where you get information from so that the persons responsible for the material may get credit as well.

Our lessons were also based on the availability of technology for each student.  The student survey showed us that while the majority of the students have computers at home, not all did; therefore, we did not assign homework that would require the use of a computer.  We also gave ample time for students to use technology both educationally and recreationally within the classroom, this way each student would become familiar with computers.  Certain students also use technology to help them with individualized learning, such as using an AlphaSmart for typing.  Technology helps students gain confidence that might not otherwise be there, so we try to incorporate it in lessons as much as possible.
