Professional Background

Hello, I currently attend the University of Michigan- Dearborn, and will graduate in May with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education.  I will be certified to teach both Mathematics and Science in grades K-8, and I love incorporating technology in the classroom.  I am very excited about the MITTEN program and having the opportunity to work with our students on technology-based lessons.

My cooperating teacher is Mrs. Cathy Auler, and it has been a pleasure working with someone who can offer so much practical experience.  She has been a teacher for 7 years, the last 6 of which she has been a 5th grade teacher at Garfield.  She is a wonderful teacher and you can tell that she really enjoys teaching Math and Science!

School and Student Population
I am student teaching at Garfield Elementary School in the Wyandotte School District.  I teach 5th grade Science and Mathematics, although the focus of this unit will be on Science.  Being a school of choice and in a district of choice, Garfield has a relatively diverse population.  Garfield is one of six elementary schools in the Wyandotte School district and has a population of roughly 374 students in grades K-6.  It is a Title One school, and has around 150 students qualifying for a free or reduced lunch.   In the year 2000, Garfield Elementary received the Golden Apple of Achievement Award and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

In our classroom, we currently have 5 students who live in nearby communities and the remaining 20 live in Wyandotte.  The make-up our classroom includes 12 boys, 13 girls, and one rabbit, ranging in a variety of ethnicities including Hispanic, Caucasian, and those of mixed descent.   Students who receive special services outside of the general education classroom include 2 Emotionally Impaired students, 2 students on a 504 plan, 2 students who visit a speech pathologist, and 2 students who visit the school social worker.  Three of these students also receive adjusted grades in Math and/or the Language Arts, and even have shortened assignments if necessary.

Technology Environment

The students are very fortunate that the computer lab at Garfield has recently been updated with 31 Dell computers operating under  Microsoft XP, allowing each of our students to have access to both a variety of software and the Internet.  The software that is available for student use includes the Microsoft Office Suite Professional Edition, Kidspiration 2 and Inspiration 7.5 , KidPix Deluxe 3, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 and Photoshop Elements 2.0, and Windows Movie Maker and Media Player.  One difficulty with the Internet was the security level for blocking websites, even educational ones at times.  This made Cathy and I even more selective in what we could or could not use in our project when it came to the Web.

In addition to the computer lab, the school's technology includes two digital cameras, one digital video camera, eight LCD projectors, a classroom set of Alpha Smart keyboards, and three laser printers.  Our classroom also has four iMac desktops, a television with a VCR, a CD and cassette player, a classroom set of TI-15 scientific calculators, and an overhead projector.  Each teacher in the district was issued a Dell laptop that may also be used by the teacher for lessons in the classroom and lesson planning

After consulting with the district's technology personnel and our computer lab assistant, Cathy and I were able to complete the CEO Forum on Education and Technology's STaR chart (School Technology and Readiness chart).  Here are the conclusions of this survey:

  1. Hardware: High Tech
  2. Connectivity: Low Tech
  3. Content: Mid Tech
  4. Professional Development: Low Tech
  5. Integration and Use: Low Tech

Based on the survey results, Garfield Elementary was classified as a Mid Tech school which will lead to several benefits to our students.  These include improving high-order thinking skills, mastery of basic skills, improve communication with parents and teachers, and make greater information resources available.

Cathy and I also created a technology survey for our students to take so that we could gain background information about our students' encounters with technology inside and outside of school.  This allowed a basis for us to format our technology lessons around the needs of our students.
