Date:    November 10, 2004                             Subject:            Math                Grade: 4th

I. OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to identify and label different types of polygons in real life situations.

II. MATERIALS:

Digital Cameras, worksheet

Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE):

G.CS.04.02  Identify basic geometric shapes, including, isosceles, equilateral, and right triangles.

National Educational Technology Standards (NETS):

2. Discuss common uses of technology in daily line and the advantages and disadvantages those provide.

3. Discuss basic issues related to responsible use of technology and information an describe personal consequences of inappropriate use.

4. Use general purpose productivity tolls and peripherals to support personal productivity, remediate skill deficits, and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.

5. Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, Web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

III. PROCEDURE:

            a. Purpose

To give students practice identifying polygons and to see which shapes are most common in the building.  The digital camera will allow the students to give proof of the shapes they found.

            b. Anticipatory Set

Remind students of proper camera usage.  Tell them they will be using the camera to take pictures of polygons in a real life situation.

            c. Questions to check for understanding

·        What is a polygon?

·        What are some common types of polygons?

·        Can you name some places outside of your math books where you could see these shapes? Could you see them at home?

·        Did you see and convex polygons? Any nonconvex polygons?

            d. Modeling Activity

·        Separate the students into groups.  Each group will visit a different room in the school building.

·        Once in the room, the students will begin to tally the number of shapes they have found.

·        Each person in the group will take a picture of one of the shapes found.

            e. Guided and Independent Practice

The students will work on counting and taking pictures independently.  The teacher will monitor each group for proper camera usage.

            f. Closure Activity

The teacher will have the class meet back together in order to get a grand total of the number of polygons found.

IV. ASSESSMENT OF OBJECTIVES/ EVALUATION:

·        The teachers will monitor to be certain the students are correctly identifying polygons.

·        The teacher will monitor that the cameras are being used correctly.
