Date:    November 2, 2004                               Subject:   Math             Grade: 4th

I. OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to list the different characteristics of polygons.

II. MATERIALS:

Kidspiration

Photographs (taken by students using digital cameras)

Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE):

G.GS.03.04 Identify, describe, compare and classify two-dimensional shapes e.g. parallelograms, trapezoid, circle, rectangle, square, and rhombuses, based on their component parts (angles, sides, vertices, line segments) and on the number of sides and vertices.

National Educational Technology Standards (NETS):

1. Use keyboards and other common input and output devices (including adaptive devices when necessary) efficiently and effectively.

5. Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, Web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

8. Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities>

III. PROCEDURE:

            a. Purpose:

To allow students to organize characteristics of polygons in an easily understandable way. Kidspiration makes organizing the characteristics easy and fun for the students.

            b. Anticipatory Set:

The teacher will ask the students to recall some of the characteristics that they discussed in class the day before.  The teacher will explain that they will be organizing and visualizing those characteristics using Kidspiration.

            c. Questions to check for understanding:

·        What is a polygon?

·        Are all of the sides of a polygon attached?

·        Can the sides of a polygon be curved?

·        Can the line segments that make up the polygon cross over each other?

            d. Modeling Activity:

·        Have the students open the Kidspiration program.  Once it is open, instruct the children to make “Polygon” the main idea.

·        Once the main idea is set in the program, the teacher should instruct the children to add ideas to the main idea.

·        Once the children have linked their ideas, the children can import pictures that will demonstrate the characteristics that they identified.

·        The projects will then be saved to a folder where they can be reviewed and graded by the teacher.

            e. Guided and Independent Practice:

The students will come up with the characteristics and link them to the main idea independently.  The teacher will circulate to be certain students are using the program properly (specifically, monitoring the links created by the children).

            f. Closure Activity:

The teacher will review volunteer students’ pictures on the projector to show the others what they found.  The students will explain the characteristics and point out how the image they attached represents the characteristic they described.

IV. ASSESSMENT OF OBJECTIVES:

·        The teacher will circulate to see if the students can use the Kidspiration program effectively.

·        The teacher will observe that the children are using appropriate characteristics to describe polygons.
