TEACHING: the earth doesn't move every time, but when it does, what a RUSH!

Welcome to my E-Portfolio

My name is Amy Korenchuk and I am a senior at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  I will be graduating in December of 2004.  At that time I will receive my Bachelor's in Science degree with a major in Social Studies and a minor in Mathematics.  This will be my second Bachelors degree.  I also hold a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Cleary College.

I decided to go back to school in 1998 to follow my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher.  Although it has taken me 6 years to complete my degree I never once regretted my decision.

I am student teacher at Thorne Elementary school in the Westwood school district. I asked to be placed here because I was familiar with the school and the district.  I have met many children who have changed my life and taught me what it truly is to be a teacher and touch the lives of many.

Thorne Elementary

Thorne Elementary School is located in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.  The school is made up of approximately 1,000 preschool to sixth grade students.
The student population  is very diverse with most students coming from an urban background.  It is a Title One school and a majority of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch.  Students at Thorne pledge that they can and will learn every morning.  This is reinforced by the teachers.

There are five 2nd grade classes at Thorne.  I was lucky enough to be placed with Mrs. Susan Karczynski.   The second grade teachers work together to come up with lesson plans and to align the curriculum with the standards and benchmarks set forth by the state.

The Star chart we completed shows that this school is a mid technology school.  There are 30 computers in a computer lab with internet access available.  The classrooms also contain three computers but these are mainly used for the Reading Counts program.

This semester I have learned that I have what it takes to be a teacher.  I can teach, I will teach.
