Amal Hassoun

Welcome to my e-portfolio!

Hello, my name is Amal Hassoun. I am a third grade teacher at Iris Becker Elementary School. I started my career as an educator with Dearborn Public Schools as a student teacher in the winter of 1993.I was hired as a first grade teacher the following fall. I have taught first and second grades as a bilingual teacher for the first six years and recently transferred to third grade in mainstream. I have earned a Masters of Arts in Education with Math major and I am certified to teach grades K-5 and math for grades 6-8. I also earned a bilingual endorsement from Wayne State University. I am currently pursuing a second Master Degree in Counseling at Wayne State University.

Iris Becker Elementary School is a fairly new school that was built in an area with a large concentration of Arabic-American population in 1991-1992. It consists of Pre-School through fifth grade and its overall enrollment fluctuates between 289 and 310 students each year.

Becker is an accelerated school that pioneered many new programs and all were successful. We are known as a Character Education Building, All-Year-Round school for 7 years, and the YALLA (Young Americans Learning Languages Actively) Project.

Most of the students at Becker school are from an Arab-American descent. A great percentage of them are Limited English Speakers (LEP).

In my building, we have a computer lab that accommodates thirty student’s computer stations with internet, a teacher station, a television, and a telephone. Each teacher in each classroom has at least one computer with internet, a television, and a phone. Recently I was able to get a TV. Scanner connected to my computer screen.

Classroom-environment:

Most of the students in my classroom come from low-income families.  Most of them do not have computers at home.   On the other hand, the use of computers for the few students who have access to them is still limited.  The students are not independent users and still depend on their parents to assist them.

Technology:

As a result of the CEO Forum’s Interactive School and Readiness Chart (STaR Chart) that I used to assess Becker School’s curricular technology integration, I found Becker School to be at a Low Tech level.  The followings are the specific areas that were assessed:

1.      Hardware:  Mid Tech

2.      Connectivity:  Low Tech

3.      Content:  Low Tech

4.      Professional Development:  Low Tech

5.      Integration and Use:  Low Tech
