This section will focus on the six ISTE
technology standards. We will provide a short summary of how we met each
of the standards.
I. Technology Operations and Concepts
Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding
of technology operations and concepts.
A. demonstrate introductory knowledge,
skills, and understanding of concepts related to
technology ( as
described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for
Students)
-
We have been using technology for several years. Both of us are computer
literate and are familiar with programs such as Microsoft Office, Netscape
Navigator, and various computer simulations. We were able to demonstrate
our knowledge of technology in all five lesson plans.
B. demonstrate continual growth
in technology knowledge skills to stay abreast of current
and emerging technologies.
-
By attending the seminars and through our own personal experience, we have
challenged ourselves to learn new technology skills. We both feel that
we have gained a lot by attending the seminars and sharing valuable technology
skills.
II. Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences
Teachers plan and design effective learning environments and experiences
supported by technology.
A. design developmentally appropriate learning
opportunities that apply technology-enhanced instructional strategies
to support the diverse needs of learners.
-
We developed technology-enhanced instructional strategies for each of our
lessons. We acknowledge that students learn in different ways so through
these strategies, we were able to meet the needs of the students.
B. apply current research on teaching and
learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.
-
In all five lessons, we were able to use the lasted research in teaching
including student-based learning, collaborative work, and multi-sensory
stimulation. We have also applied technology to improve and enhance an
unit.
C. identify and locate technology resources
and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability.
-
By asking our tech. support, media specialist, and completing the STaR
Chart we were able to identify what technology was available for us. From
there, we decided what resources would be appropriate for the lesson.
D. plan for the management of technology resources
within the context of learning
activities.
-
Planning for the management of technology resources involves developing
a lesson that will fit the allotted time. We also checked the web sites
that we were going to use to see if they were Web-Sensed. The last step
was to reserve the resources that we were going to use.
E. plan strategies to manage student
learning in a technology-enhanced environment.
-
Students were familiar with how to act in the computer lab. We had the
students sign their names on the sign up sheet next to their computer.
Each student located their computer and logged on. We walk around
the computer lab and answer any questions the students have with the project.
Students know that if they go to an inappropriate web site, they will lose
their computer privileges.
III. Teaching, Learning, and the Curriculum
Teachers implement curriculum plans, that include methods and strategies
for applying technology to maximize student learning.
A. facilitate technology-enhanced
experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
-
In each of our lessons, we included all of the ISTE standards as well as
the Michigan Curriculum Standards for Social Studies.
B. use technology to support learner-centered
strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
-
Each of our lessons were student-centered. The lessons were designed to
address all of the needs of the students. We supported the students by
guiding them.
C. apply technology to develop
students' higher order skills and creativity.
-
Our lessons included higher order skills and creativity. For instance,
students had to write an editorial on a Muckraking topic. They had to use
Microsoft Publisher to design it like a newspaper.
D. manage student
learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.
-
We designed the lessons so the students were able to get right to work.
The handouts we gave the students right before the assignment helped the
students gather their thoughts and were ready to express them in the project.
IV. Assessment and Evaluation
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment
and evaluation strategies.
A. apply technology in assessing
student learning of subject matter using a variety of assessment techniques.
-
We used several rubrics in assessing student learning. We developed the
rubrics using Microsoft Word.
B. Use technology resources to
collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate
findings
to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
-
We use a gradebook program to collect and analyze data. The gradebook program
helps us to address any problems the student is having concerning their
grades because we are able to calculate their grade in a matter of seconds.
By doing this, we can maximize the students learning and help the student
if they are having trouble.
C. Apply multiple
methods of evaluation to determine students' appropriate use of technology
resources for learning, communication, and productivity.
-
We accomplished this by giving the students WebQuests questions, oral presentations,
tests, worksheets, and papers. Each of our evaluations involved technology.
V. Productivity and Professional Practice
Teachers use technology to enhance their productivity and professional
practice.
A. Use technology resources
to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong
learning.
-
By working on the MITTEN project, we have increased are professional development
in implementing technology into the classroom. We believe it is important
for teachers to use the resources available to them and be involved in
projects like MITTEN.
B. Continually evaluate
and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions
regarding
the use of technology in support of student learning.
-
We reflected on each lesson we taught. Our examples are located on the
reflection link.
C. Apply technology to increase
productivity.
-
By applying technology, we were able to cover more material in a shorter
amount of time.
D. Use technology
to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger
community in order to nurture student learning.
-
We have setup a web site to better collaborate with the parents of students.
We also inform the parents of future projects and tests. If parents have
any questions, they can e-mail us.
VI. Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues
Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding
the use of technology in PK - 12 schools and apply that understanding in
practice.
A. Model
and teach legal and ethical practice related to technology use.
-
We accomplished this by emphasizing to the students that plagiarism will
not be tolerating and how it is illegal to copy.
B. Apply technology
resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds,
characteristics, and abilities.
-
Our lessons were designed so students with diverse backgrounds, characteristics,
and abilities would be able to comprehend the lesson.
C. Identify
and use technology resources that affirm diversity.
-
Our immigration project promoted students to write a narrative from the
perspective of someone with a different background other than their own.
D. Promote
safe and healthy use of technology resources.
-
Our computers have Web-Sense which blocks students from going to web sites
that are inappropriate for high school students.
E. Facilitate
equitable access to technology resources for all students.
-
Although we teach in a wealthy community, we know some students may not
have a computer at home. We have stayed after school to help theses students
complete their projects and provide them access to resources they do not
have at home.
