WELCOME TO MY E-PORTFOLIO!

Hello and thank-you for taking the time to visit my e-portfolio! My name is Afrin Fatima Alavi and in May 2004, I will be graduating with a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) through the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  I am a product of McGill and Concordia, the two Canadian universities where I received BAs in  Psychology and Child Studies.  In addition, I have a major in Political Science, as well as a minor in French (Bonjour!) from UM-D.  I have previously taught in a private school at the lower and upper elementary levels.  I am presently student teaching at Churchill High School in the Livonia Public School District and I work with two cooperating teachers, in three subjects areas:  United States Government, Global Studies, and Humanities.

According to the City of Livonia web page, Livonia's "rich soils and abundant harvests" first drew pioneers from New England and New York state.  Located in northwest Wayne County, and boasting   a population of over 100,000, Livonia is the 2nd Largest City in Wayne County. About 2,000 students from Livonia and the neighboring suburb of Westland, attend Churchill High School and almost 80% of them advance to higher education.
Joe George, my cooperating teacher for United States Government, and I had the unique opportunity to experience and incorporate the University of Michigan-Dearborn MITTEN program into our curriculum. This allowed us to integrate technology into the teaching and learning process.  My e-portfolio is a result of the lessons designed in collaboration with Mr. George.  I would also like to thank John Filiatraut for encouraging and promoting my use of technology in his Global Studies classes.

CHS maintains and supports five computer labs in its building.  The math, business, and science departments each have individual labs while the other two are available for teachers to sign out. During my internship, the Library's computers were changed over from  iMacs to Dells.  Moreover, an evaluation from the CEO Forum on Education and Technology, by way of its K-12 STaR Chart, has rated Churchill High School as a Mid Tech school.
