About Us

Welcome to Facilities Operations!  Our team is responsible for the planning, construction and ongoing maintenance and operations of the University of Michigan–Dearborn’s physical property—its buildings and infrastructure, grounds, and utilities.  We watch over the environmental health of the campus and help assure the occupational health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff.  In addition, we provide general services for the campus community, including mail and deliveries, shuttle and parking services, and fleet maintenance.

Project/Work Requests:  Project and work requests can be initiated by e-mail to umd-facilities-req@umich.edu or by telephoning the Facilities Operations call center at 313‑593-5270 during regular business hours.  Call center team members assure that urgent requests are assigned immediately and that non-urgent requests are directed to the appropriate department.

Larger projects are assigned a project manager from the appropriate team at the beginning of the project process.  This person is responsible for the project from initiation to completion, creating a single point of interface for the end user and a single point of responsibility for the project.


Our Teams

Facilities Planning:  Directed by Kate Pepin, this team provides programming, design, and construction services for the campus.  The planning team is also responsible for master planning, developing UM-D specific construction standards, space utilization and analysis, interior design, furniture purchases and layouts, wayfinding and signage, and sustainability.

Office of Environmental Safety and Emergency Management:  Under the leadership of Laura Drabczyk, this team manages the university’s health and safety program, promotes activities that proactively support the local environment and the health of the Rouge River, assures regulatory compliance, and engages in emergency preparedness activities.

Facilities Management:  This team is responsible for ongoing operations on the campus and includes building maintenance, custodial services, grounds maintenance, skilled trades, boiler operations, and fleet of 42 vehicles. Our team maintains 56 acres of grass, gardens, and natural areas, 2.9 miles of roads, 5.2 miles of sidewalks, 17.5 acres of parking lots, and 31 buildings with over 1.7 million square feet of maintainable space.

Facilities Administration and Finance:  This team, under the leadership of Kathleen Haag, includes the call center, inventory, purchasing, and accounts payable.  The call center serves as the common point of entry for all facilities operations projects. They are responsible for the daily communications and operational needs of the departmental staff and the campus community. As the customer service center, we strive to support the campus, staff, and the area managers in all aspects of business operations which include campus wide renovation and construction projects; interaction with contractors/suppliers and the campus community; assisting with the completion/update of work requests; emergency response; and financial and budget operations.

General Services:  Bonnie Southerland supervises the general services team which handles mail and delivery services, shipping and receiving, parking permits, and shuttle operations.
