The Mission of the Institute for Local Government at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is to increase the capacity of locally-elected officials to govern effectively and address local needs with a regional perspective.
How We Accomplish Our Mission:
The Institute for Local Government (IFLG) combines the academic excellence of the University of Michigan with the expertise of elected officials and professionals throughout southeast Michigan to create learning opportunities for those serving in local elected office. We cover both theory and practice with a special emphasis on the issues facing citizens, school districts, and local governments in southeastern Michigan.
IFLG offers the newly elected officials immediate opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to gain confidence in their governing. IFLG offers experienced elected officials resources to improve their ability to address critical policy issues that arise while they are in office.
While enhancing the capacity of elected officials to govern their local communities IFLG also seeks to build a regional perspective among our clients. We hope to improve our region's ability to address challenges and opportunities collaboratively so that we may effectvely compete in a global society.
Most of our learning opportunities are provided through evening seminars taught by experts in the field. We also provide on-line learning and networking opportunities to our participants to continuously link them to resources that will help them do their jobs better.
