School of Education Teacher Academy to help teachers deal with classroom anger

DEARBORN / March 21, 2008---Paul Zionts, dean of the School of Education at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, will present “Managing Anger and Frustration in the Classroom: Theirs and Yours” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 12 at the campus’s Fairlane Center as part of a Teacher Academy series.

The workshop will serve as an introductory training session focusing on the classroom techniques and practices of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).

Zionts is the author of Teaching Disturbed and Disturbing Students; Inclusion Strategies for Students with Learning and Behavior Problems: Perspectives, Experiences and Best Practices; Emotional and Behavioral Problems: A Handbook for Understanding and Handling Students; and Autism: Information and Resources for Professionals and Parents.

Workshop participants will learn how to apply REBT to their professional and personal lives. Attendees will learn tools and strategies for diagnosing and remediating anger, frustration and stress; rational classroom management and overcoming irrational and self-defeating beliefs; and designing and implementing problem-solving criteria.

Zionts will present research, theory and techniques to help educators prevent and handle stressful situations. The workshop will focus on assertive communication, enhanced self-confidence and discussions of the belief systems necessary to allow teachers, parents, caregivers and students to attain their goals.

The deadline to register for the workshop is March 28. Cost is $100 for the general public and $60 for UM-Dearborn alumni and students. After March 28, the cost is $125 for the public and $75 for UM-Dearborn students and alumni.
