DEARBORN / April 7, 2008---Shirley Dudek Demmer believed that education plays a vital role in breaking the cycle of violence against women.
Her experience as a volunteer for First Step of Plymouth--which aims to reduce domestic and sexual violence and provide services to those affected by the crimes--solidified her passion for wanting to make a difference in the lives of women.
In fact, she chose women’s and gender studies as her primary focus while pursuing a master of arts in liberal studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2007 because she believed that the more she learned about women’s issues, the more she could help those she served at First Step.
Shirley Dudek Demmer died suddenly in November 2007, but her passion for education and helping abused women will endure in the form of a $50,000 endowed scholarship fund at UM-Dearborn.
The Shirley Dudek Demmer Memorial Scholarship, established by her husband, William J. Demmer of the Jack Demmer Automotive Group, will provide annual scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students studying women’s and gender studies at UM-Dearborn.
“Shirley was a student of life, always learning or experiencing something new,” according to William Demmer. “She always said, ‘You’re never too old to learn,’ and she lived by it.”
“This gift is about keeping Shirley’s memory and legacy alive,” according to Diane M. Gulyas, director of development for the campus’s College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters. “The gift will help students who, like Shirley, have a passion for diversity and women’s issues by providing much-needed financial support for them to pursue their studies and make a difference in the lives of women.”
Students enrolled, or who are interested in enrolling, in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program will be able to apply for the scholarship beginning this fall, for use during the 2009-2010 academic year. Recipients will be chosen according to merit and need.
