'Water Policy in Southeast Michigan'

Seminar for local officials on water and sewer issues
DEARBORN / May 14, 2008---Local officials can learn more about “Water Policy in Southeast Michigan” during a special seminar from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 22 at the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s Fairlane Center.
UM-Dearborn’s Institute for Local Government will host the seminar, which will include speakers Victor Mercado, director of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department; James W. Ridgway, executive director of Alliance of Rouge Communities; Kurt Heise, director of Wayne County Department of Environment; and Chuck Hersey, manager of environmental programs for Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG).
Local officials will explore how to talk to constituents about water issues, including information about the responsibilities and authority of city, county, and other local governmental bodies in controlling and financing the region’s water and sewer systems; the number of people served and volume of activity handled by the region’s water and sewer system; the major environmental regulations and concerns that impact the water and sewer system; and the role that the federal courts have played in overseeing the region’s water and sewer system over the past three decades.
The seminar, which will be held at UM-Dearborn’s Fairlane Center, is offered in partnership with the Michigan Municipal League. Participants will receive credit from the Michigan Municipal League.
