UM-Dearborn's Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive to observe 25th anniversary with reception on Sept. 9
August 24, 2007
DEARBORN / Aug. 24, 2007 --- The Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Henry Ford Estate.
"It's important that after 25 years, the Voice/Vision Archive is still here, still moving ahead,” according to Jamie Wraight, curator of the Voice/Vision Holocaust Survivor Oral History Archive. “Its longevity can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of history Prof. Sidney Bolkosky as well as to the integrity of his life's work. The interviews, and the archive, are testaments to not only the stories of those who survived, but to the perseverance of one man and the community that supports him."
The Sept. 9 observance at the Estate will feature presentations by Victoria Monacelli, Hank Greenspan and Agi Rubin, with music by the Phoenix Quartet.
Monacelli, an 8th grade teacher at Warren G. Harding Middle School in Philadelphia, will speak about her students’ use of interviews from the Voice/Vision Archive.
Greenspan, a psychologist and playwright at the U-M Ann Arbor campus, has been writing and teaching about the Holocaust for almost three decades. He is the author of On Listening to Holocaust Survivors: Recounting and Life History and Reflections: Auschwitz, Memory, and a Life Recreated, with Rubin.
Rubin was born in Monkacz, a town in the part of Czechoslovakia which was annexed to Hungary in 1938. In 1944, her family was deported to Auschwitz where her mother and younger brother were killed. She worked in a sorting shed in the camp until it was evacuated in January 1945. She survived a forced march of several months duration and was liberated in Germany when she was 15 years old. She was later reunited with her father.
