DEARBORN / Aug. 11, 2006---New first-year students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn will once again be welcomed to campus with a daylong series of events designed to initiate them into academic life.

Student-success workshops for incoming freshmen and a new student convocation ceremony will be held Sept. 5, the day before classes begin. The event will include community-building experiences and seminars with faculty and other students to learn about strategies for academic success in college.

A formal convocation ceremony in the Fieldhouse will be the centerpiece of the day, followed by an ice cream social for new students, their parents and faculty and staff. For the first time this year, transfer and graduate students will be invited to participate in the convocation ceremony, which will begin at 1 p.m. and include a procession of faculty members and new students, music from a brass ensemble and remarks by Chancellor Daniel Little.

"New student convocation and the events associated with it signify the University's official fall welcome for all of our new students,” according to Christopher W. Tremblay, director of admissions and orientation. “These activities represent the final stage of the enrollment process and we are excited about celebrating with this incoming class of scholars."

When the first-year students arrive on campus at the beginning of the day, they will participate in UM-Dearborn’s Operation Adventure, which is a team-building program. That will be followed by seminars designed to help the new students make the transition from high school to college. A faculty member will address "What do faculty expect?" and a student panel will discuss "What I wish I'd known."

At the lunch, tables will be identified by academic majors, so new students can meet faculty members and other students interested in the same disciplines.

The afternoon will conclude with transfer and graduate joining their first-year student counterparts for the convocation followed by the ice cream social.
