Partnership paves way for students studying criminal justice studies at Macomb Community College to seek bachelor’s degrees at UM-Dearborn

DEARBORN / July 30, 2009---A new partnership between the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Macomb Community College will make it easier for students earning associate degrees in criminal justice at Macomb to seek a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice studies at the UM-Dearborn.
The agreement allows Macomb students to seamlessly transfer up to 62 credit hours toward a bachelor’s degree at UM-Dearborn. Officials from the two institutions signed the agreement in a ceremony at UM-Dearborn in May.
”This new partnership with UM-Dearborn represents an important opportunity for Macomb law enforcement students to pursue an advanced degree and position themselves for a greater breadth of future career prospects,” said Michael Metz, director, Public Service Institute, Macomb Community College.
UM-Dearborn’s criminal justice studies program has shown dramatic growth since its creation in 2001, according to sociology Prof. Kevin Early, director of criminal justice studies at the campus.
The bachelor’s degree program is intended to prepare students for careers in criminal justice and law enforcement-related fields.
"Our new partnership with Macomb will let their students move seamlessly into our criminal justice bachelor's degree program. We are ready to serve them well!” according to Kathryn Anderson-Levitt, dean of UM-Dearborn’s College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters. “Another full-time criminal justice studies faculty member joined us this year, and yet another is coming in the Fall. Their scholarly expertise and practical experience in law and policy alongside the hands-on expertise of our wonderful part-time faculty will give students from Macomb what they need: the strong Michigan liberal arts background plus practical knowledge in the field."
