January 23, 2009

DEARBORN / Jan. 23---Carmen Van Kerckhove, co-founder and president of the diversity education firm New Demographic, will visit campus today to talk about “Recognizing Racial Stereotypes and Their Impact on the Workplace” during the campus’s Conversation on Race discussion series.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the University Center’s Kochoff Hall, located off of the campus’s Richard Drive.

Kerckhove publishes “Racialicious,” an award-winning blog about race and pop culture. Time Out New York magazine has lauded Racialicious for its “savvy, clearheaded commentary.” Anti-racist educator Tim Wise, a previous Conversation on Race speaker, calls the blog “one of only a few places I turn to for cutting-edge and up-to-date info on race trends.”

Kerckhove is a regular commentator on National Public Radio who also writes for CNN.com’s “Anderson Cooper 360” blog and the Society of Human Resource Management.

UM-Dearborn’s “A Conversation on Race” series is held each semester to promote open, honest discussion about racial issues, featuring a guest speaker or presentation followed by large- and small-group discussion.

“We seek to explain our experiences with race and validate the experiences of others as we develop personal and institutional strategies to combat racism in all its forms,” according to Cory Anderson, student activities supervisor at UM-Dearborn.

The event is sponsored by UM-Dearborn’s Student Activities Office and New Detroit, a coalition of Detroit-area leaders who focus on the issue of race relations and economic and social equity.
