New partnership encourages transfer of students to UM-Dearborn from HFCC

June 19, 2008

DEARBORN / June 19, 2008---Transferring to the University of Michigan-Dearborn just got easier for Henry Ford Community College students.

A new partnership between the institutions will give freshman applicants who are not eligible for admission the first time they apply to UM-Dearborn the opportunity to participate in the new Bridge Program, which encourages students to take specific transferable courses at HFCC. Upon completion of the requirements, students will be able to transfer to UM-Dearborn.

“Anything we can do to simplify the process for our students is not only a benefit for both of our institutions, but especially helpful to our students,” HFCC President Gail Mee said at a ceremony marking the signing of the agreement last month.

UM-Dearborn Chancellor Daniel Little agreed. “I am a huge advocate for the partnership between our two campuses,” he said. “In addition to what this means for our students, this is good news for the entire region. Our prosperity will depend on how many students we can help attain college degrees, and this program will be very helpful to a large number of people.”

The program will support the transfer process by offering students the opportunity to take advantage of the combined resources of HFCC and UM-Dearborn, including meeting regularly with an HFCC counselor and a UM-Dearborn admissions counselor, who will guide them during their education.

Students in the Bridge Program also will have the opportunity to attend special events which will provide information on financial aid, cooperative education and how to transition successfully from a two-year to a four-year school.
