Renewing Aid

Applying for Aid

Five Easy Steps

You must complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Financial Aid) each year to be considered for financial aid. Each year, there may be changes to income, assets, household size and number in college. Even if there are no major changes, a new FAFSA is needed to confirm the family status for the past year and to be considered for federal, state and university financial aid programs.

1. Confirm your Federal Student Aid PIN
You can renew or request a duplicate Federal Student Aid (FSA) PIN at  www.pin.ed.gov.

2. Apply on time
The Office of Financial Aid recommends that students and their families apply for financial aid by February 14th--Valentine's Day. The FAFSA on the Web (www.fafsa.ed.gov) will be open for business on January 1, 2008 for the 2008-09 academic year. Remember to print out your application information and confirmation number.

The U.S. Department of Education expects students to complete the FAFSA online rather than using the paper FAFSA.  If a student wishes to file a paper FAFSA, he/she must contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center to request that the paper FAFSA be mailed.  The toll-free telephone number is 800-433-3243.

3. Review your Student Aid Report (SAR)
Your Student Aid Report is the U.S. Department of Education’s response to your FAFSA. Please review the information for accuracy and make changes if necessary. Retain this document for your personal records. The Office of Financial Aid will receive a copy of your application electronically.

If you did not provide an E-mail address on your FAFSA, you will receive a  multi-page Student Aid Report through the mail.

If you provided an E-mail address on your FAFSA, you will receive an e-mail that contains a secure link to your SAR information. Follow the link to view your application results. You may view this an unlimited number of times during the academic year.

4. Provide additional information if requested
If your application is selected for a process called verification, you will be asked to submit your family’s Federal tax returns and other income documentation. You will also be asked to confirm household size and number of children in college. The Office of Financial Aid will automatically notify you of required documents.

Failure to complete your file in a timely manner may result in closing your application. Applications can be reactivated with the submission of the required documents. Delays in responding may result in reduce gift aid assistance due to limited funds available.

5. Review and respond to your Financial Aid Offer
The Office of Financial Aid will send you a Financial Aid Offer by E-mail. The OFA accepts grants on your behalf, but you must decide on loans and work study awards. You may accept your financial aid offers online using UM-Dearborn Connect Accepted amounts will be divided equally between the Fall and Winter Terms.

If you are receiving private scholarships, benefits from your employer in the form of a tuition plans, and/or other sources of funding, your award may need to be revised. A revised financial aid award will be sent to notify you of any changes to your original award.
