Special Circumstances Emergency Fund

The University of Michigan-Dearborn has allocated an additional $300,000 to help students who have been affected by the economic downturn. Funds are intended to help students complete their degrees at the University. “We recognized that this is a difficult time in our economy and are offering options to address families’ declining financial resources”, stated Chancellor Daniel Little.

The $300,000 special emergency fund will be distributed through the Office of Financial Aid on the basis of demonstrated financial need.

Who can be considered?

Students and their families who have experienced hardship and/or financial reversals because of the economic conditions can be considered. Examples include:

    • Loss of job through layoff
    • Change from full-time to part-time employment
    • Reclassification of job resulting in a lower income
    • Remaining full-time but loss of income because of job furlough
    • Loss of benefits: unemployment compensation
    • Loss of benefits: medical insurance now paid through COBRA or private insurance
    • Company wide or department wide loss of overtime for 2009

While this is not an exhaustive list of examples, it illustrates the emphasis for the use of funds.
