UM-Dearborn encourages students to file the FAFSA by February 14, 2008 for the 2008/09 year. Apply early to be considered for the most funds.
How to Apply
1. Apply for admission
Freshmen and transfer students should contact the Office of Admissions to begin the process. You can apply online, download an application or call the Admissions Office at (313) 593-5100.
2. Request a Personal Identification Number (PIN)
Both you and your parents can obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) through the U.S. Department of Education at www.pin.ed.gov. Using their PINs, both the student and the parent can “electronically sign” the certification section on the FAFSA on the Web.
3. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov using your PIN as an electronic signature. If you are considered a dependent student based on the Federal definition, your parent must also electronically sign your FAFSA. We recommend that you print out your application and your Confirmation Page for your records. Send your FAFSA information to UM-Dearborn by using our school code number: 002326
4. Review your Student Aid Report (SAR)
Your Student Aid Report is the U.S. Department of Education’s response to your FAFSA. Review the information for accuracy and make changes if necessary. If there are errors on your SAR, correct them as soon as possible. Retain this document for your personal records. The Office of Financial Aid will receive a copy of your application electronically.
If you provided an e-mail address on your FAFSA, you will receive an email that contains a secure link to your SAR information. Click on the URL in the message and follow the instructions to see all of your application results.
If you did not provide an email address on your FAFSA, you will receive your Student Aid Report in the mail.
5. Provide additional information if requested
If your application is selected for a process called verification, you will be asked to submit your family’s Federal tax returns and other income documentation. You will also be asked to confirm household size and number of children in college. The Office of Financial Aid will automatically notify you of required documents. Delays in responding may affect your aid awards.
6. Review and respond to your Financial Aid Offer
The Office of Financial Aid will send you a Financial Aid Offer. The OFA accepts all gift aid on behalf of students, but requires your decision on loans and work-study awards. You may respond on the secured section of the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Web site or submit the paper Student Decision Form enclosed with your award.
You may also use the Student Decision Form to report any additional educational assistance that is not reflected on your financial aid award offer. If you are receiving benefits from employer tuition plans or private scholarships, your award may be revised.
