Program Description and Activities

This program presents a unique opportunity to discover, through bird observation and math/science/social studies activities, more about the lives of some of the colorful and interesting birds that can be found in our campus Natural Areas.

Your students will be engaged in a multifaceted program experience that may include:

  • Use field guides to become familiar with a variety of birds.
  • Learn the important bird plumage characteristics known as "field marks."
  • Go for a naturalist–led walk to listen and look for birds.
  • Have an up close look at live, wild birds that have been captured and banded as part of the RRBO research (fall only).
  • Explore some of the tools and techniques of bird banding.
  • Study an aerial photograph to see how the campus Natural Areas lures migratory birds to rest and feed.
  • Play a game to study the importance of migratory stopover habitat.
  • Use data gathered by RRBO in a statistics exercise that will use graphing.
