Insect Identification: The Basics

What is an Insect

An insect is an Arthropod or a creature with a segmented body with an exoskeleton. Specifically, an insect is an arthropod with 6 legs and 3 main body sections: a head, thorax, and an abdomen. Most insects follow a similar body plan; however, there can be considerable variation within a group of insects and so there are always exceptions.
