Since 2001, the Rouge River Bird Observatory has combined summer breeding bird surveys with dragonfly surveys, with an emphasis on the odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) of Wayne County.  Despite being highly urbanized and heavily populated, much is still being discovered about the odonata of the county.  Julie Craves and her husband Darrin O'Brien have established over two dozen new county records.  Two of them were also new records for the state of Michigan!

Available here are a list of RRBO odonata publications, a Wayne Co. checklist, links, and photos.

This Amber-winged Spreadwing (Lestes eurinus) was a county record when found at UM-Dearborn in June 2002.

Citrine Forktail (Ischnura hastata).  This is the smallest ode in North America.  This individual was found in Northville on 24 Aug 2002, a new county record and the second state record.  The first was found by Julie Craves and Darrin O'Brien a week earlier in Lenawee Co.

The sexes of many species do not look alike.  The male (above) and female (below) of the abundant Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) are quite different.  These photos were taken at UM-Dearborn.

White-faces are aptly named.  Here is a male Dot-tailed Whiteface (Leucorrhinia intacta) at the UM-Dearborn rose garden pond.
