July:8 July: A Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was seen near the Interpretive Center today. This is our first summer record.
7 July: An albino recently fledged American Robin was seen by the lake. Here's a photo by Michael Endres.
June:
25 June: The Northern Mockingbird was in the brush dump today...singing exuberantly. This is the only time this bird has been reported singing; it's possible it is another bird. A Common Yellowthroat was singing in the same location, the only recent summer record for campus.
11 June: A male Eastern Bluebird was along the Rouge River between Evergreen and Michigan Avenue today; they have not nested in the city in a number of years. Along the Rouge concrete channel between the railroad bridge in Melvindale to campus, there are at least 112 Cliff Swallow nests.
10 June: A singing Magnolia Warbler was in east Dearborn today (still not a late date!)
7 June: A singing Black-throated Green Warbler (with an odd song) was by the lake today.
6 June: A Yellow-bellied Flycatcher was seen again.
4 June: A Yellow-bellied Flycatcher and Cape May Warbler in east Dearborn both set late spring dates.
Male and female Eastern Kingbirds are identical...except for the shape of their outer primaries. Here is a pair we banded in May 2002.
