March 2002:
31 Mar:  The first Turkey Vulture, Eastern Phoebe, and Hermit Thrush were seen today.

30 Mar:  Golden-crowned Kinglets have hit town.

27 Mar: Two Buffleheads, five Ring-necked Ducks, and one Redhead were at Greenfield Village.

18 Mar:  The number of Pied-billed Grebes on the lake has climbed to 5 (our record is 16).  Two Eastern Bluebirds have been in the Rose Garden since yesterday.  A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was also seen.

14 Mar:  An American Woodcock was in the big meadow between the Estate and the lake; usually we find them near the organic garden behind the parking structure on campus.  The gazebo in the garden is a good place to wait and listen for them displaying.

13 Mar:  A Pied-billed Grebe was on the lake today.

10 Mar:  A pair of Hooded Mergansers were on the lake, and a pair of Wood Ducks were on the river today.

February 2002:

14 Feb:  A different Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, this one a juvenile, was tending sap wells on the Lakeside Trail today.  Another grackle was heard, woodpeckers were drumming, cardinals were singing...spring is on the way.

9 Feb:  The first Common Grackles hit town.

3 Feb:  The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was seen lurking near the EIC feeders.  At least 4 White-throated Sparrows are frequenting the feeders, as is a Red-breasted Nuthatch banded earlier this winter.

2 Feb:  Two Great Black-backed Gulls flying over campus is probably the first time they've been seen near campus and away from the Ford Rouge Plant.

1 Feb: A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker is only our second February record.

January 2002:

28 Jan:  An adult Bald Eagle flew over the Estate today.

26 Jan:  The Northern Mockingbird was again today near Fairlane Estate.

24 Jan:  Another Common Redpoll visited the feeders today.

16 Jan:  The Northern Mockingbird was finally seen again today, near the front of Fairlane Estate.

6 Jan:  A Common Redpoll visited the feeders today.

1 Jan: Interesting birds found on campus during the Dearborn portion of the Detroit River Christmas bird count included the/another Northern Saw-whet Owl, two Golden-crowned Kinglets, a red-phase Eastern Screech-Owl, two Brown Creepers, and two Northern Flickers.  For details, see the Dearborn CBC summary.
