Atlas results for 2003
Nine people submitted date for 2003
(Walt Pawloski, Daryl Aspery, Steve Santner, Julie Craves, Paul Cypher,
Jim Fowler, Tom Carpenter, Tom Pavlik, and Bill Rapai). Here is a
brief synopsis of the results:
Number of species: 122 with codes of
confirmed, probable, or possible.
Number of species confirmed: 78 (up from 62
in 2002).
Number of new species this year: 8 (including
possible Least Flycatcher, Alder Flycatcher,
and White-eyed Vireo).
Species recorded in most blocks: American
Robin and Song
Sparrow (23) .
Species confirmed in the most blocks: American
Robin (19).
Highlights: A Great
Blue Heron nest in Westland was a surprise, a Great
Egret was a new species, found nesting with the Great Blue Herons
in Sumpter Twp.; Broad-winged Hawk was confirmed
nesting in Lower Huron Metropark, and probable or possible in 5 other
blocks; three Peregrine Falcon nests fledged
young this year in Detroit and River Rouge from the introduction program;
for the second year, a singing Clay-colored Sparrow
was on territory at Oakwoods Metropark, but nesting was not confirmed.
