Atlas results for 2002
State funding was delayed this year, so
2002 ended up being somewhat of a pilot effort for the Atlas project.
Eight people put in a concentrated effort this year. Here is a brief
synopsis of the results:
Number of species: 114 with codes of
confirmed, probable, or possible; plus 8 "observed" only.
Number of species confirmed: 62
Number of volunteers submitting data: 8
Highlights: Two pairs of Least
Bitterns probably nesting at Crosswinds Marsh (the pair of resident
Bald Eagles did not attempt to nest this year);
about 150 pairs of Common Terns (state threatened)
on the bridge piers at Grosse Ile; a territorial Sedge
Wren in northwest Wayne Co.; Cliff Swallows
confirmed in 4 blocks, including over 100 nests along the Rouge River in
Dearborn.
Species confirmed in the most blocks: American
Robin (10).
Interesting "possibles": Hooded
Merganser, Broad-winged Hawk, American Redstart, Prothonotary Warbler,
Clay-colored Sparrow, Western Meadowlark.
