Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas II

Atlas results for 2002
State funding was delayed this year, so 2002 ended up being somewhat of a pilot effort for the Atlas project.  Eight people put in a concentrated effort this year.  Here is a brief synopsis of the results:

  • Number of species:  114 with codes of confirmed, probable, or possible; plus 8 "observed" only.
  • Number of species confirmed: 62
  • Number of volunteers submitting data: 8
  • Highlights: Two pairs of Least Bitterns probably nesting at Crosswinds Marsh (the pair of resident Bald Eagles did not attempt to nest this year); about 150 pairs of Common Terns (state threatened) on the bridge piers at Grosse Ile; a territorial Sedge Wren in northwest Wayne Co.; Cliff Swallows confirmed in 4 blocks, including over 100 nests along the Rouge River in Dearborn.
  • Species confirmed in the most blocks: American Robin (10).
  • Interesting "possibles":  Hooded Merganser, Broad-winged Hawk, American Redstart, Prothonotary Warbler, Clay-colored Sparrow, Western Meadowlark.
