Where to Sample

As long as there is standing water for at least a few weeks, you will have a successful sample. This includes lake edges, ponds, retention basins, ditches, streams, and rivers.

If you are sampling on private land always get permission before sampling.

When visiting a site, try to find a variety of habitats to sample. Scoop along trees that fell into the water, sample the emergent and submergent vegetation, and run your net along the bottom. This will help you find a wide variety of creatures.

I sampled in the Rose Garden Pond (Figure a.) in the Enviromental Study Area in the University of Michigan-Dearborn. For more information concerning the history and location of that pond see The Rose Garden Pond.
