Benefits of Counseling

Consultation Services

The counseling staff is available to consult with faculty and staff about students in distress or a classroom problem. These consultations may resolve the problem or help the student obtain the proper referral.

FASAP (Faculty and Staff Assistance Program)

The office of Counseling & Disability Services at the University of Michigan –Dearborn participates in the employee rehabilitation program known as the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program or FASAP. FASAP is a resource for all University faculty, staff, retirees, and their dependents. Its purpose is to provide confidential assistance to individuals with persistent and potentially troublesome personal problems.

Our FASAP services include:

    • Short term counseling services to all staff, faculty, and their immediate family members on personal, emotional, family and workplace issues

    • Critical Incident, Trauma and Grief Counseling

These services are free of charge and confidential.

To obtain a FASAP consultation, please contact Counseling & Disability Services directly at (313) 593-5430 to arrange an appointment. Our office is located in the University Center, room 2157 UC. All FASAP consultations are scheduled with the staff on coverage for the day, unless the client specifically requests a particular staff counselor. Consultations for university employed people may also be requested by a supervisor, an Employment or Personnel representative, Workers’ Compensation staff or the Benefits Office.

Please note that a university employee may chose to have their FASAP consultation at a location other than where they are employed.  UM-Dearborn employees can attain FASAP services on the Ann Arbor campus. For FASAP locations click on http://www.umich.edu/~fasap/contact/locations.html

FASAP consultations provided by the counseling staff of UM-Dearborn will be brief, up to a maximum of 6 sessions per academic year. Presenting problems that require more extensive treatment will be addressed with a treatment recommendation and those requiring specialized treatment may be referred to a community agency and/or specialist if needed.

Note: All information discussed in FASAP consultations are strictly treated with the highest level of confidentiality.
