The Student as a Consumer It may seem strange to identify yourself as a consumer when selecting and attending a college. Funding a college education is obviously different than buying a car. A car is ultimately just a ride that depreciates as soon as you drive it off the dealer’s lot. Your college education, however, is probably one of the most important parts of your personal and career development, and your education should only appreciate in value over the years.
Your college education costs time, effort and money. It is a major investment. As a result, you should carefully evaluate the college that you plan to attend. To help you make a good choice, you should have information on the school’s academic programs, facilities, cost of education, financial aid programs, refund policy and any other information that you think will help you make the right decision.
In addition to being a smart consumer when selecting a college, you should also protect yourself from identity theft--one of the growing areas of criminal activity.
