The Department
of Natural Sciences at the University of Michigan-Dearborn operates
a
Science Learning Center (SLC) for students enrolled in a variety
of science courses.
The SLC is located in Room 1126 of the Computing Wing of the Science
Building and is open daily, including weekends, as required by usage.
The purpose
of the SLC is two-fold:
1) The SLC helps to bridge the gaps in educational background among
entering students,
thus striving to assure that all science students have the same
opportunity for success in
science courses by emphasizing and teaching the essential matematical,
graphing and
laboratory skills.
2) The SLC helps both students and instructors use laboratory time
more efficiently.
Valuable laboratory time is wasted if instructors must demonstrate
the use of instruments
to small groups of students, so that untrained students do not damage
sensitive and
expensive equipment. The SLC provides self-paced practice with the
instruments before
class.
In order
to accomplish these goals, students are assigned to complete instructional
modules in one of several formats: printed material, slide and audio
tape tutorials, video
tapes, or computer programs. Mastery of the subject matter is assessed
by a short post
test, but the module and post test may be repeated as many times
as necessary without
penalty. Trained Student Assistants provide help with the modules
and administer post
tests.
