Automobile Insurance

Michigan law requires automobile insurance if you want to drive a car in Michigan. The amount and type of insurance coverage you should get depends on where out live and how much protection you want.

Types of automobile insurance

  • Liability insurance protects you (the policyholder) if you are responsible for an auto accident causing bodily injury or property damage. About half of the states in the United States, including Michigan, require you to have it to own or drive a car.

  • Collision Insurance covers the car. It pays the cost of damage to your car if you hit something (another car or object). Most people purchase it for newer cars.

  • Comprehensive insurance also covers the car, but also other types of damage such as fire, flood, vandalism, theft, or other specified hazards.

  • Medical payments insurance pays for the medical expenses of the policyholder and passengers injured in an auto accident, regardless of fault.

Most companies offer packages that include both property and liability coverage. Most offer discounts if you have more than one kind of insurance with the same company.

The cost of automobile insurance (the rate) varies from company to company. Rates depend on several factors: the age and type of car, where you live, how many people use the car, their ages and driving records, and your own age and driving record. The worse your driving record, the more you pay. The rates can go up if a driver causes an accident or is convicted of a traffic violation. Compare rates and benefits before you decide on a company. You can lower the costs by taking a driver education course, or by selecting a higher deductible. A standard deductible for collision coverage is $250. This means that you would pay $250 on any repair bills (any that are covered by your policy), and the insurance company would pay the rest. If you chose a $1000 deductible, you would pay that amount for each repair, but you would pay less for your insurance. Certain Safety features such as anti-theft devices and airbags can also qualify you for additional savings.

In Michigan your insurance company will provide you with a card to prove that you have insurance coverage. Law that you keep this card in the vehicle at all times requires it.
