Victorian Sites on the Web

The Victorian Web: A marvelous site with much information about Victorian literature, art, society, etc. It also contains sections on individual authors. It's a hypertext organized very similarly to "Charlotte's Web" and "Pip's World."

The Victorian Research Web: A scholarly site devoted to the study of Victorian literature and culture and associated with the VICTORIA email discussion list. The site contains some excellent resources and links, as well as a wonderful searchable archive of those email discussions. The archive is an excellent resource for research projects. Check to see if your topic or something related to it has been discussed--the postings often contain excellent information and references to sources. Subscribe to the list (the site tell you how) and see how scholars talk with each other about the period.

Northeast Victorian Studies Association: This site contains a list of links to other Victorian sites.

Discovering Dickens: This is the site at which you'll register to receive the weekly installments of Hard Times. You can also see the original parts of Great Expectations, complete with original illustrations, and learn more about the novel's historical context, at this Stanford University site.

The Dickens Project: This site includes an electronic archive that contains information on Dickens and Great Expectations and links to other Dickensian sites. If you're stumped about research project topics, you might get some ideas here.

The Dickens Page: This site contains information on and links to just about everything to do with Dickens. It's not very selective, though, so you'll need to use it with some care. One very nice feature is searchable concordances to Dickens's novels. Want to find all the appearances of a particular word or phrase in Great Expectations? Go here and search.

Gad's Hill Place: More commercial than scholarly, but this site on Dickens is named for his house in suburban London.

The Bronte Sisters Web: Maintained by the same scholar responsible for The Dickens Page. Lots of information and links, but also not very selective, so use with some care.
