Web Assignment 6
Visit The Victorian Web's section on the
characteristics of Aestheticism and Decadence. Do you see any of
these
characteristics in the works we've read of Pater (especially in the
Conclusion
to The Renaissance), Wilde (especially in "The Critic as
Artist"),
and Swinburne? Link specific characteristics (in other words, be
specific about which ones from Landow's list you're talking about) with
specific textual examples, and explain how the textual example fulfills
the specific characteristic. (Also, note that some of Landow's examples
are very precise--not images of flowers, but images of flowers used as
an example of transience; not images of cosmetics, but images of
cosmetics used as an example of extreme artifice.) Be sure to discuss
all three writers.
