English/Comparative Literature 347 studies the literature of ancient Greece and Rome. This semester, we will focus on the three classical epics—Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid—and Greek tragic drama by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Our primary attention will be given to close reading of these works in their historical contexts, but we will also consider the function of allusion and intertextuality by examining some of the ways in which later writers have made use of these works.
