Coach Hatfield and the UMD Womens team at the Nicole Miller Memorial Game |
| |
| October 19th, 2008 :: Jackson Community College |
Jackson, MI - Jackson Community College would score real early in the game finding the net in the first 5 minutes of the game. Jackson C.C controlled play for the rest of the first half but could not find the net again.
The 2nd half started the same way the 1st half ending, in the 50th minute Jackson C.C found the net to make the score 2-0. That goal sparked UMD and the Wolves took control of the game and had 2 easy missed chances to score, but found the net on the 3rd chance with a give and go from Jen Dahl to America Guzman to make the score 2-1 in the 60th minute. With 30 minutes left UMD had 4 very good chances to score but could not finish on off.

| October 15th, 2008 :: Rochester College |
Rochester, MI - The UMD Womens soccer team continued its slump and unfortunately its 5 game goalless streak. The first 45 minutes would see UMD hold control of the game. The Wolves controlled all parts of the field except the attacking third, something they have struggled to do all season. Part of the problem was the Wolves passing, as it would begin to break down towards the end of the half. But UMD would have 3 good chances right in front of the goal, but the finishes were a little wide, soft or high.
The 2nd half UMD controlled the first 15 minutes and missed 2 more easy chances to score. The game changed after that and UMD was under attack for the rest of the game. Rochester did not have any great scoring chances, but at any time they could have scored. The last 20 minutes the Wolves would hardly see the ball into their attacking end, as they would end in a scoreless 0-0 draw with Rochester College, extending their winless streak to seven.
Coaches Notes: We have played 3 bad games in a row and I thought playing Rochester would get the girls back on track, but if we do everything but score, you cannot win games. For the remaining games, I will move players around to try and find goals and end the season on a positive note.

| October 4th, 2008 :: Schoolcraft College |
Trenton, MI - Saturday was an emotional day for the Wolves soccer team, as it was the Nicole Miller Memorial Game. Michigan - Dearborn would host a special ceromony before kickoff in which they would present her retired and framed Jersey to 10 of Nicole's Family Members. It was very emotional time for both the teams and fans gathered in Trenton.
Schoolcraft came out string but the Wolves would weathered the storm with some great saves from Keeper Brittany Vella. Schoolcraft would spend the whole first half on the attack but could not come up with a goal. The 2nd half was a better game for both sides. UMD found some offense behind the Schoolcraft backline. Michigan - Dearborn would have 2 one on one's but missed on both chances. While UMD started to spread out it left space Schoolcraft to attack and that they did finding 2 goals to win the game on a 2-0 final.
Coach's Notes: To play a #4 Nationally Ranked team and deal with a very emotional pre-game and come out and play they way they did, I am very proud of these young Ladies!

| September 24th, 2008 :: Adrian College |
Adrian, MI - Adrian College came out and attacked UMD very earlier and often, controlling all play the 2nd half and finding the net in the 15th and 22nd minute on defensive miscues. Michigan - Dearborn looked like a team who has not played in 2 weeks, unorganized!
The 2nd half was a little different, UMD found some space to attack, but nothing real threatening. The 2nd half was still controlled by Adrian. UMD had some combined minutes of possession through the 2nd half and defensively UMD found their shape, and did not give up much space in defending end. Michigan - Dearborn would fall to Adrian in the end 2-0.
Coaches Notes: I did not drive to Adrian to expect to win, I expected to compete to win, that we did for about 30 minutes total. I thought the 2nd half the Ladies made some adjustments, to make a better game. I am not upset about losing, I am upset we did not play well at all. We have a lot to work on this week.

| September 14th, 2008 :: Jackson Community College |
Trenton, MI - Coming off a hard fought game the day before, things would not start well for the Wolves on this day. Jackson C.C scored of a penalty kick given in the 8th minute off a Bridget Huston foul. That set the tone in the first 25 minutes as UMD could never find their legs giving up 2 more goals in the 11th and 23rd minute on defensive miscues. The UMD Back-line, which has been the backbone of this team all season, could not find a rhythm. After the 3rd goal given, UMD woke up a little bit and strated to pressure the team from Jackson C.C. Freshman Angela Campau found the net on a 20 yd bender far post to help the UMD Women wake-up in the 34th minute. In 10 minutes UMD had 6 shots, but great saves by the Jackson C.C Keeper kept the ball out of the back of the net. All that pressure and reward, Jackson C.C weathered the storm, cleared a ball 40 yards right to a speedy Jackson C.C forward all alone for a goal in the 44th minute that was the needle in the balloon. If UMD had not given up that goal, there may just have been light at the end of the tunnel.
The 2nd half was a lot different, the focus going into the 2nd half was scoring in the first 10 minutes, then scoring again in the next 10 minutes. Nine minutes into the half Jr. Jennifer Morgan found Fr. America Guzman for combination play to an open net goal. The next 10 minutes set the tone of the rest of the 2nd half. Once again UMD Women applied a lot of pressure having 5 quality chances to score, but either the Jackson C.C keeper saved them, or the shot would sail wide. As they did in the 1st half, Jackson C.C weathered the storm, sent a long ball to a Jackson C.C player who was in a foot race and buried a shot in the 20th minute. After that UMD had no legs to battle for goals and would end up taking the 5-2 loss.
Coaches Quotes;" We have played 5 great games in a row, that is tough to do. To play on that high, then to play a team, we felt we should have beat going into the game, the whole team lost focus, even the coaches. We got a taste of our own medicine on Sunday. If I could go 5 great games to 1 bad game, I will take those ingredients. Now we get re-focused"

| September 13th, 2008 :: Schoolcraft College |
Livonia, MI - Michigan - Dearborn would face a strong test after their win against Alma, in Schoolcraft who is ranked #7 in NJCAA in the Nation. Schoolcrafts ranking would show as they dominated play through the whole game, possession was 75% to 25%. Once again the UMD Defense was the strong point of the game. Everything Schoolcraft threw at them, they handled. In the 28th minute Schoolcraft found some space on the right side and finished a shot to take the lead 1-0. The last 10 minutes of the 1st half Scraft had several chances to score, but came up short every-time.
The 2nd was still dominated by Schoolcraft, but UMD did put together some nice movement and found some ways to muster some offense. The 63rd minute UMD had a great chance to equalize the game, but the Schoolcraft Keeper came up big to stop the shot. It would only take Schoolcraft 5 minutes after that scare to find the net again and send the Wolves home, they would go up 2-0 and not look back.
Coaches Quotes: We are in our 3rd year as a team, we have played Schoolcraft 5 times and every-time the score has gotten closer, 8-0, 7-1, 6-1, 5-2, now 2-0. To play a program with the great reputation Schoolcraft has and bring the difference down every-time, shows the UMD Women are headed in the right direction. I know people looked at this record and see only 3 wins and 5 losses, but 4 of those losses are against 4 very elite programs that have been around for a very long time. This UMD team is doing things I have never guessed they would.

| September 10th, 2008 :: Alma College |
Alma, MI - Alma came out the 1st half and dominated play. Alma would work early to take 2 shots that sophomore Keeper Brittany Vella saved to keep it 0-0. In the 30th minute junior Jennifer Morgan intercepted a pass and hit freshman Gabby McGuire in stride and she finished it off with a beautiful shot into the back of the net. In soccer it's about capitalizing on the chances you get.
The 2nd half it was a pretty equal game, both sides played well. Alma still had more chances to score then UMD. In the 60th minute Alma took a shot that got past Vella but Freshman America Guzman covered the net and cleared the ball before it went in. Congratulations to Brittany Vella, who would record her first shutout of the year.
Coaches quotes: When your team is not playing great, you make up for it in effort and that is what we did. Once again the UMD Defense played great, and limited any real scoring chances for Alma. |

| September 6th, 2008 :: Concordia College |
Ann Arbor, MI - The UMD Wolves applied every pressure on the Cardinals, but the Cardinal defense answered everything thrown at them. Two times the UMD Women had one on one's against the last defender and came up short on both times. The first half was all about defense from both sides. Both teams had moments of possession in the 1st half, but neither team gave any room up on their defensive ends. With about 10 minutes left in the first half Concordia was controlling the game on the attacking end and create some chances, but on the only shot in the first half, Sophomore Brittany Vella made the save.
The 2nd half was much the same as the first, back and forth play, but no shots from either team. The game was played between the 18's, which is what a soccer game should be. In the 65th minute the Cardinals broke thru on a one on one against the Keeper and finished the shot to score the only goal in the game. After that UMD started to attack more, but could only muster one shot on frame.
Coaches comments: "5 games in a row we have played very well. I think this team has found it's rhythm. I like what I see, we are connecting as a team, attacking as a team and defending as a team. Playing schools who give scholarship money and have veteran players against my very young team, we maturing very quickly and growing under fire."

| August 31th, 2008 :: Holy Cross College |
Ann Arbor, MI - The Lady Wolves would come out and continue to dominate in their two game Tournament. The game was played exclusively in the Holy Cross end as UMD continued to apply the pressure. Then in the 36th minute a rebound shot off the post was followed and finished by Freshman Kristina Juska. The Saints would get organized though and started to put an attack together for the last 8 minutes and found the net in the 43rd minute to take half to a 1-1 tie.
Following a recent trend, the Wolves came out in the 2nd half strong and found the net 2 more times. In the 58th minute Freshman Angela Campau would find Junior Jennifer Morgan who found Freshman Gabby McGuire on a great double assit goal on maybe the prettiest goal of the young year. In the 78th minute Freshman Andrea Gannan found fellow Freshman America Guzman to cap off the scoring. Sophmore Brittany Vella was between the pipes again for the Wolves and again had a good showing. The Wolves would take both games they played this weekend defeating Holy Cross 3-1.
After the game Coach Mike Hatfield had this to say about his teams play. "It felt like the game was played from half field to the Holy Cross 18 yard box and early in the first half it was all control, but no goal."
Speaking on the Holy Cross goal: "At this level there is no breaks, and it felt like we went into the half early at the 40th minute, when a half is 45 minutes long".
Speaking on the teams overall play: "That is 4 great games the Women have played in a row. They are really finding themselves on the field, it is very nice to watch your team develop and grow".

| August 30th, 2008 :: Rochester College |
Ann Arbor, MI - The future for UMD Womens soccer is bright and it was on display today as 4 Freshman would tally 5 goals for UMD against Rochester College in the opener of the Concordia Tournament. UMD Women struck first only 1:40 into the game with cross from Junior Jennifer Morgan to Freshman Courtney Webb with a one time finish. The 2nd goal came off a rebound finish from Freshman Angela Campau in 8th minute. The game was played in the Rochester end as the Wolves would be relentless in their attack. Rochester would find the goal in 17th minute off a long ball pass that got over the UMD backline, hit the post then was redirected by a Rochester attacker. After that UMD was all over Rochester in the first half. Half time would leave the Wolves comfortably in front 2-1.
The 2nd half would see the same style of play from the Wolves, attacking on all fronts. UMD would put in three more goals in the second half with goals at the 65th (Freshman Aly Kiselis), 73rd (Freshman Aly Kiselis), 85th minutes (Freshman America Guzman) ending the game with a 5-1 win. Sophmore Brittany Vella had a solid game in net only allowing the single goal. |

| August 19th, 2008 :: Albion College |
Albion, MI - UMD would find their first goal of the year off an individuals hard work and persistence to challenge every ball and cause a turnover to score. Freshman Gabrielle (Gabby) McGuire scored the goal, hard blue collar work pays off. Albion struck 2nd in the 32nd minute off a loose ball goal in front of the UMD goal. Then the Britons would strike again in the 40th minute off a cross to an unmarked player on the left side. Albion controlled the 1st half of play throwing 15 shots on goal. Keeper Brittany Vella kept the team in the game with great save after great save.
The 2nd half was a totally different game, going back and forth between both ends having chances, Albion would have a little more pressure on UMD, but the UMD defense was led by Freshman Christine Center, Freshman Sarah McKay, and Captain Jr. Bridget Huston and a few others. The great play by Sophomore Keeper Brittany Vella would continue as she answered everything thrown at her. Albion scored in the 60th minute on a great shot near post upper 90. UMD answered that goal 5 minutes later on direct free kick service by Sophomore Liz Martin to Freshman Aly Kiselis. With 30 minutes still left the rest of the game was very close with chances on both ends, but neither team scored again leaving the Britons on top 3-2 as the game drew to a close. Goal Keeper Brittany Vella played outstanding facing over 20 shots and only alowing 3 past. Head Coach Mike Hatfield said "The performance by Brittany was one of the best I have seen a Keeper have, ever!" |

August 19th, 2008 :: Siena Heights University
|
Adrian, MI - The Wolves Womens Soccer team opened up their 2008 campaign in Adrian against Siena Heights, and unfortunately it would not go so well. The game was controlled by Siena Heights as they would find the back of the net on 5 seperate occasions, 4 goals in the first half and adding another in the 79th minute. Siena Heights is a regionally ranked team who went to the national Semi-finals 2 years ago. But things went better in the 2nd half when UMD was not so nervous to play, only allowing one goal in the second half.
Coach Mike Hatfield spoke after the game, "We got ourselves under-control, gained a little confidence and played well. The goal that was given up in the 2nd half was a huge miscue and that happens, beside that I was very excited after in the 2nd half. To have no Seniors playing and 9 freshman play and watch them grow up on the job. I saw some things that I liked a lot."
