October 25, 2008 :: Rochester College

Rochester, MI - It would be a game of two halves for both Michigan - Dearborn and Rochester College as both halves would display very different teams. Rochester possessed play and the ball a lot more, but UMD had more and better scoring opportunities in the first half. UMD would have 2 very nice chances to get the first goal, but could not capitalize on their efforts. The game would be played more on the UMD defensive end. The Wolves though were happy to defend their end of the field and not give up any counter attack goals.

The 2nd half of the game opened up a little bit and both team found some space to build attacks. Both Keepers made some very nice saves to keep the game tied 0-0 and made it a very exciting game to watch. In the 63rd minute Rochester would find the back of the net to score the 1st and only goal of the game. In the 80th minute the Wolves would have a beautiful shot that would force the Rochester keeper to make a great acrobatic save to give his team the win.

October 12, 2008 :: Saginaw Valley State University

University Center, MI - Michigan - Dearborn would enter the match coming off a loss, to Grand Valley State 3-1, looking for a chance at a quick rebound to their winning ways. Unfortunately it would not come against the Cardinals who were able to stand strong on their home turf. The Wolves would get a goal from Corey Neubauer, his third of the year, and be assisted by Justin Kramer. That would be it for the Wolves offense as they would fall in a final score of 2-1 against Saginaw Valley State.

Michigan - Dearborn will play next on October 18th, at Holy Cross College with kick-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.

September 28, 2008 :: Western Michigan University

Kalamazoo, MI - Western Michigan would open up the game against Michigan - Dearborn with a bang, finding a goal in the 1st minute of the game to set the tone of the 1st half. The play was set up by defensive miscues on the Wolves half. Western Michigan would find their 2nd and 3rd goals in the 12th and 21st minute. After being down 3-0, UMD would wake up and reverse the pressure finally creating momentum for themselves against the Broncos. UMD created 2 Penalty kicks and missed them both.

The 2nd half was a totally different game for the Wolves. Michigan - Dearborn would come out firing, scoring twice to make it 3-2. The rally would fizzle out though as Western Michigan found the net 2 more times to gain a comfortable 5-2 lead over their guests. The Broncos would hold the score and beat Michigan - Dearborn on that final.

September 25, 2008 :: Calvin College

Grand Rapids, MI - Michigan - Dearborn took the field at Calvin with one thing on their mind, revenge. This was a rematch of a 4-1 loss for UMD Wolves two weeks ago. The first half was more controlled by Calvin College, they possessed a lot more and played more organized. If it was not for UMD'S great defensive play and one very good save for the UMD Keeper, the Wolves could have went into the half down.

Calvin found the net early in the 2nd half to take the lead. After that it was a totally different tempo from both sides. UMD came out hard and played at a very high tempo, tempo to defend, tempo to attack. For about 30 minutes each team found space to attack, but no shots on goal, both defenses played a great game. In the 85th minute a great ball played in found space in the Calvin 18 box would have left a UMD forward 1v1 against the keeper, was mishandled. With 10 minutes left Coach Hatfield pushed to a 3-3-4 to try and find a goal, Coach Hatfield is a firm believer in a 2-0 loss is the same as a 1-0 loss, trying to tie the score. In the 89th minute UMD was fouled 22 yards outside the Calvin goal. The ball was sent in and cleared out to UMD Freshman Anthony Sautter who one timed hit it from 25 yards out from the right side to bury the shot back corner left side to tie the game with 44 seconds left.

Coaches Notes: To tie a team who beat us 4-1 two weeks ago is a great result, especially when you are the team to score with 44 seconds left. I am very proud of the way the Guys played!

September 20, 2008 :: Wayne State University

Detroit, MI - Michigan - Dearborn came out on fire against the Warriors of Wayne State on Saturday. Only 3 minutes in they would find the back of the net and the route was on. UMD would pressure Wayne State all game long and force the game to be played in Wayne State's half of the field for nearly the full 90 minutes. The scoring parade would continue as the Wolves would net 8 total goals and it would have been more if the Warriors keeper hadn't come up with some brilliant saves. Scoring would be spread even for the Wolves but Adi Djakovic would cash in twice while Brenndan Gallahger, Brad Glaab, Corey Neubauer, Nick Elliott, Matt Conrad and Ronnie Jandou would each grab a goal a piece.

Coach Mike Hatfields goal in the game was not to concede a goal, a problem that has plagued the Wolves all year. He would get his wish but said with a win of this size its hard to tell if you're really prepared for the next game or not. The Wolves are sure to get a much more stern test when they take on Calvin College this Thursday, September 25th.

September 17, 2008 :: Oakland Community College

Trenton, MI -The UMD defense gave up a goal in the 5th minute of the game on a cross and finish by Oakland CC. But it would not take long for UMD to answer with a goal in the 10th minute by a pass from Joel Martin to Justin Vasilevski. Dearborn would strike again in the 28th minute from another pass by Joel Martin to Justin Kramer. Getting his share of the scoring spree, after all the assits, Freshman Joel Martin scored an unassisted goal in the 36th minute. Oakland C.C would answer in the 41st minute with a break-away goal, but UMD would answer again a minute later by a great pass and finish from Brendan Gallagher to Nick Elliott. The half would end with UMD above at 4-2.

The 2nd half begin with a goal in the 50th minute by Oakland C.C, but UMD would again find an answer in the 55th minute by a set-piece delivered from Andy Kuszak to Brad Glaab. The rest of the game would be controlled by UMD. Each team would have a few more chances, but nobody would be able to finish any of the shots off. The Wolves would cruise to a 5-3 victory.

Coaches notes: I felt as a team we have not defended well this season at all. To give up 11 goals in 5 games is not good soccer. We have no problem scoring, but that is not my issue. I may have to move players to change the way we defended. I am happy with the fact that we won, but not how we won.

September 15, 2008 :: Calvin College

Trenton, MI - UMD men have had 2 weeks off, no games, just training. It was unlucky that a game was canceled due to rain, as the team felt they needed that game to prepare for Calvin.  It was easy to see the Wolves had not played in a long time. Calvin scored 3 goals in the 2nd, 5th and 14th minute, all assits from the same player, all crosses and finish off the head. In soccer, you can almost determine what you are going to get in the first 15 minutes of a game for that half, and the Wolves would be a very unorganized and lost team. Coach Hatfield would make some big changes to the line up after the disorganized start. "I had players, playing positions they normally do not play, just to find some chemistry" Hatfield would say.

The 2nd half the game speed was a lot different, UMD found some rhythm and found ways to attack and move the ball. UMD had 2 break-away chances in the first 10 minutes that went wide or saved. Calvin countered attacked, found some space on a 1v1 with the Keeper and buried it in the 57th minute. If you just showed up to halftime, you would think the game was very even. UMD found the net on a Jose Cabello cross and finish by Freshman Brad Glaab in the 82nd minute. UMD fell 4-1 as the final whistle blew.

Coaches Quotes" This game is about rhythm and not playing in 2 weeks, showed we had no rhythm. We could not defend, pass, attack, we had no shape and no cohesiveness. I felt we lost this game in training, You win games in training, and the training atmosphere has been bad. Hopefully the boys learn their lesson today."

August 30, 2008 :: Eastern Michigan University

Ypsilanti, MI - The UMD men would finish their home-home series with Eastern Michigan this past weekend, drawing the Eagles 1-1. UMD would come out firing and strike first in the 3rd minute of the match with a pass from Freshman Joel Martin to Sophmore Derek Salliote. Both UMD and Eastern would not find many scoring chances after that, and the half was played mostly in the center of the field.

The 2nd half UMD was all over EMU but could not get to pay-dirt. Chance after chance UMD could not get the security goal to hit home. Although UMD controlled the game, all it took was one ball thru for EMU and a mis-read by the UMD keeper to tie the game 1-1 with 10 minutes left in the game. UMD in 10 minutes would create 6 good scoring chances, but could not find the answer.

Coach Mike Hatfield on missing the chance to sweep EMU: "In the 4 years as a program we have never beat E.M.U twice. As always, the first game we dominated, then the 2nd game we always come out flat."

Coach Mike Hatfield on the field:  "The field did not help the game at all, being only around 75 yards in length and 60 yds in width and very hard. I will never blame a pitch, but trying to play technical on a field like that, does not help the game, so it felt like we were playing 12 players."

August 26, 2008 :: Adrian College

Adrian, MI - Adrian College struck early and often as they scored 3 goals in the 12th, 20th and 30th minute, catching the Wolves flat after 10 days off. UMD could not get organized anywhere on the field, and every aspect of the game was controlled by the Bulldogs. With 10 minutes left in the first half UMD would wake up and find their legs. With a few scoring chances, they had some hope to take with them into the 2nd half.

 The 2nd half would continue to build on this and was a different story. UMD found themselves and put pressure on Adrian with a goal by Senior Adi Djakovic (3) from a corner kick by Sophmore Justin Kramer(1) in the 50th minute. In the 60th minute Sophmore Matt Conrad (1) followed and finished a rebound shot by Freshman Corey Neubauer to make the game 3-2 with lots of time left. But it would be all she wrote for the Wolves on this night. Though UMD had some good chances, they never found the net again.

August 16, 2008 :: Eastern Michigan University

Trenton, MI - The opening game of the season was handled pretty easily by the Wolves. All pressure was applied by UMD and the defense played outstanding only giving up three shots and barely feeling any pressure at all. Senior Andy Kuszak, Mark Rossi, Anthony Sautter, and Jose Cabello led the defense. Four year player Adi Djakovic finished a header goal from a 30 yard service from another four year player, Andy Kuszak, to start the scoring.

The 2nd half begin with Freshman Joel Martin getting brought down in the 18 yard box to set-up a penalty kick for Adi Djakovic. The 3rd goal would come from a freshman to freshman pass as Ramzi Abou-Chakra dropped a ball off for Nick Elliott who hammered the 23rd shot on net for the Wolves and made it count. Brent Puinti would make easy work of the Eagles 3 shots and pick up his and teh teams first clean slate of the season, winning 3-0.

Coach Mike Hatfield had this to say following the game, "Overall I thought we played well for being our first game. We have a lot of things to clean up and made some mistakes a very good team would have capitalized on. I was very impressed with a lot of freshman players, to be in the first game and excel they way they did, let's just say it was nice to see!"
